We received an anxious phone call from the lady who was looking in daily on our home while we were away. She had found it broken into and mess everywhere. She had called the police. I called a neighbour, who fielded the police while we drove home some 400 kilometres.

We thought we were prepared for the shock, but we were not. I don’t want to relive the details, except to say that we got many of our possessions back, and the thieves (so sorry, “alleged” thieves) put behind bars until their case comes up. Some irreplaceable items of family jewellery had gone, possibly irretrievably.

It is a familiar story, and the drama is played out daily around the world. Not only do the thieves take what they want, they also seek to inflict maximum emotional damage on their victim. Now that points out a very important fact. Only humans do that to one another.

Humans are fundamentally bad. In my experience it takes a supernatural event to change a bad man into a good man. No amount of “correction” or counselling, or anger management or whatever liberal First World society throws at bad people makes the fundamental change. Leopards do not change their spots.

I have forgiven the thieves (we believe there were two and a child). I am free of their evil now. They will live with it all their lives unless they are supernaturally converted from their evil ways. I will, however, be in court when they plead Not Guilty. I hope to eyeball them so that they are reminded of just how low they went. For until they admit that, they are forever lost.
